Happy New Year

These photos came up when I typed in "Happy New Year" in English. As you can see, they are quite different images compared to traditional Japanese New Year Images. I guess it is akin to the difference between Christmas in America and Christmas in Japan. In Japan, Christmas is rather a date kind of holiday. I spoke with my students and it looks like some people exchange presents (and I did receive a few gifts this year from some students :) ), some people eat some cake, and many people are busy with seasonal-and-End-of-Year parties.
この写真が「Ｈａｐｐｙ Ｎｅｗ Ｙｅａｒ」とグーグルイメージサーチで入れた時にでました。ご覧の通り、日本とのお正月とのイメージと違っっている。まあ、日本でのクリスマスとアメリカでのクリスマスの違いみたいのではないかと思います。日本で、クリスマスはもっとデートみたいな祝日だ。生徒さんとクリスマスについて何するかと話かけた時には、「ある人はプレゼントを交換する。。。」とか、「ある人はクリスマスケーキ、タルト（Ｔａｒｔ）を食べる」とか、「多くの人が忘年会とクリスマスパーティーとかで忙しい。。。」と聞いた。
In America, especially for Christians, Christmas takes on a deeper level of significance. There is indeed a lot of talk and advertising about buying Christmas presents, but others urge people to think about the "True Meaning of Christmas", which is really celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ and spending time with family.Even if a family is not Christian and they celebrate Christmas, many people still feel it is an important opportunity to spend some time with family. In Japan Christmas is almost purely commercial: with the sales of cakes, chocolates, and decorations. But I can see that it is a fun event in the year to enjoy the winter "illumination." In America we just say Christmas lights, but illumination is a fancy word and is an English word, after all.
アメリカには、特にキリスト教の方には、クリスマスはもっと深い意味を取ります。もちろん、アメリカでも、広告が多くなったり、お子様たちはいつもクリスマスプレゼントを楽しみにしているようになったりしますけど、「クリスマスの意味をもう少し深くに考えるべきだ。。。」と言う人とメディアも多いです。それは、キリスト教の方に、イエスのお誕生日のことと家族と一緒に時間を過ごせることだ。キリスト教ではない人もクリスマスを祝う時に、その家族と過ごせる時間と福を分けることが大切だとしている人が多いです。日本では、クリスマスは主に広告的な祝日だ：ケーキ・デコレーション・フライドチキンなどの販売が多くなる。広告的な祝日にも、やはり楽しい冬季節のイベントだ。冬イルミネーションを楽しめるし。。。アメリカではただ、「クリスマスライト」と言うけど、イルミネーションはもっとおしゃれな言葉のではないか。。。
I also asked my students what they were going to do for New Years, and had a range of responses. The most common answers included: (1) Cleaning the house (2) Resting (A Do-Nothing New Year) (3) Going back to one's hometown to see family. Going to one's hometown is very common for Americans on Christmas. In America, New Year's is more of a night to spend with friends or maybe a date night.
生徒さんにはお正月何をするつもりかを聞いてみた。一番人数が多かったのは（１）家の掃除と〔２）家でのんびりすること〔寝正月）（３）ふるさとに帰ることと家族と時間を過ごすこと （４）神社に行くこと
ふるさとかおばあちゃんとおじいちゃんのところに行くことがアメリカでは、クリスマスにします。アメリカでは、ニューイアーは日本のクリスマスみたいに、デートの一夕になる。。。 ^。^
As a foreigner, I was surprised that many places were closed from the 28th of December. I was also surprised that when my friend came to visit me, she was unable to withdraw money from her bank during the New Year holiday (From Dec 31st - Jan 4th). My bank was ok, but charged a holiday fee for taking money. I will have to remember this for next year.
海外から来て、今回の日本でのお正月一つの気づいたところがあった。それは２８日からたくさんの場所がもうしまっているようになったことだ。友達が私のところに来たときに、彼女の日本での銀行の講座でも、お金をＡＴＭから取られなかった。これを来年まで覚えておきたい。
